Acne can affect people at any age for different reasons. Some include food, stress, hormonal changes, or the environment.
I was lucky not to have acne in high school, so I was shocked when I started getting it in university. I went through a lot of different medications to fix it only to find out that they weren’t going to work longer-term because dairy was causing mine.
There are effective ways you can help reduce your acne.
Find out what is causing your acne before anything else
Have allergy tests done to see if it’s stress, hormonal, environmental or something you’re eating or wearing that’s causing your acne. No treatment will be success until you determine what’s behind it.
The most important thing to do with most of these skin conditions is to keep your hands off of them. Avoid scratching or touching any lesions. Try relaxing in a warm bath with baking soda or oatmeal added to the water to help with ones that might be itchy.
Cortisone ointments, oral antihistamines, and even antibiotics are helpful for some conditions, but see your doctor before treating yourself to get the right solution for you. A skin condition can also be a sign of allergy, infection or other illness that you should consult with your doctor to ensure you get the right treatment.
Try natural treatments
Daily face wash: Strawberries
Strawberries contain salicylic acid which helps fight acne. You may break out more at first as it removes more dirt than your cleanser.
To make it: Take five large strawberries and a cup of water, and blend until smooth. You can also add one tablespoon of almond oil (optional). Apply it to your face and neck using your fingers or a soft cloth. Massage it in for one minute before rinsing. Keep the remaining cleanser in the fridge until you finish it.
If your breakouts are caused by stress, there are some useful relaxation techniques you can try.
- Try deep breathing, meditation or visualization. One simple visualization technique is to imagine that you’re in a peaceful place, smell the crisp air and imagine the beautiful view.
- Go for a walk.
- Read or listen to some music to calm your mind.
- Take some time out to spend with friends or family; go for dinner, to the movies or do anything you enjoy.
- If you have a pet, play with it. Thinking about it makes me smile!
