African Piri Piri chicken or tofu stew for an awesome meal!

Super delicious Gluten-free African chicken or vegan piri piri stew

I love stews. I haven’t found one I haven’t liked yet! So, it came as no surprise to me that I truly enjoyed this African piri piri stew. It was so tasty!

  • Total Time: 60-70 minutes, cook time: 45-50 minutes, prep time: 10-15 minutes
  • Makes: 4 Servings

  • 3 pounds of chicken pieces of your choice, or extra-firm tofu, chopped
  • 4 pounds of tomatoes, chopped
  • 1 cup of water
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 large potato, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1/3 cup of fresh cilantro, chopped fine
  • 2 carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of almond butter
  • 1 cup of garbanzo beans, drained
  • 3 tablespoons of piri piri sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 chili peppers, chopped (optional)


  • Wash the chicken or tofu, beans, vegetables and cilantro
  • Heat a pan on medium and add the oil
  • Sauté the onion, potato, celery, cilantro, and carrots in the oil
  • Add the chicken or tofu and turn them occasionally until they are browned, about 5-10 minutes
  • Add remaining ingredients and simmer on low for 40 minutes for the chicken, or 20 minutes for tofu
