Ever since I was young, we ate plantain chips. I love them. Most people I know from the Caribbean eat plantain in some form. It’s also popular in other parts of the world. I remember wondering why my parents would cook them since they look like bananas. I assumed they were fruit and tasted the same. They do not, and if you ever tried to eat one raw, it does not taste good.

However, cooked they are delicious and also healthy if you don’t fry them.

Some of the health benefits of plantain include healthy skin, and they help decrease your chances of heart disease and diabetes.

Here’s a quick recipe to serve as an appetizer or snack.

Baked plantain chip recipe

  • Makes: 4 servings
  • Total time: 20 minutes, cook time: 12-15 minutes, prep time: 5 minutes

  • 2 medium ripe plantains peeled and cut into small slices
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Dash of cayenne pepper


  1. Mix ingredients together and pour over raw plantains. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 12 minutes. Check after 8 minutes and remove from oven.
