Ways to have fun alone or with others


Summer fun

I like to enjoy myself and no matter how busy I get; I fit in some time to have fun. Unfortunately, I’ve had to work 80-90-hour work weeks at times (nothing I’m proud of, but it’s part of being an entrepreneur sometimes). But I still manage to squeeze in something.

Taking a break is an important part of healthy living and being efficient in all parts of your life.

At my birthday a couple of years ago

I’ve never tried to suppress the inner child in me. I like to watch cartoons, play games and joke around. Seriousness is not a word in my vocabulary outside of work and other appropriate times. I realized when I was looking for pictures for this post that I had too many to choose from, so I might need someone to teach me how to be an adult!

The ability to relax and have fun is second nature to me, even when things are tough. But it’s not that easy for everyone.

Sometimes it helps to be reminded that relaxation is good for your overall health. It helps you stay in balance mentally and physically, even if all you have time for is an hour a day. Relaxing also helps reduce the tension that builds up when you’re stressed. And honestly, it just feels so good!

How to have fun

Choose some things that are just for you and some that you can do with others. Schedule the time into your day to make sure it’s something you don’t miss. I know – that sounds opposite of fun but if it’s the only way you can get to it, then I say do it! Pick sports, interests and trips that make you and your family, or group of friends, feel good.

What I do for myself

  • Watch cartoons. I can binge watch Scooby Doo, Futurama, The Simpsons and American Dad.
  • Murder She Wrote marathon anyone? No, it’s probably just me.
  • Read and write. It helps that writing is part of my job!
  • Play Boggle.
  • Take walks around my city and see some sights.
  • Go for lunch. This one is relatively new for me. I used to feel self-conscious eating at a restaurant alone, but after being forced to when traveling for work, I love it, even at home!
  • Dance around the house. It’s my way of working out on my own!

What I do with others

  • Workout with a personal trainer or friends.
  • Go for dinner.
  • Wine tasting, not necessarily formally, just anywhere.
  • Play games. Since I believe I’m the next Jessica Fletcher, I try to play Clue as much as I can. Boggle is also fun with others.
  • Sing terribly while listening to some of the worst songs ever made!
  • Go to baseball games. Let’s go Toronto Blue Jays!
  • Attempt to play pool or ping pong, but give up after a game that lasts over two hours. And the way I play pool, this happens often!

If a Murder She Wrote marathon doesn’t appeal to you, for reasons I will never understand, here are some other ideas for having fun.

Just for you

  •  Find a new interest or bring back something you used to enjoy.
  • Establish and maintain a regular exercise routine.
  • Learn a new sport. Consider cycling, basketball or soccer.
  • Join a club. Book clubs and wine clubs are just two options.
  • Do something creative, such as dancing, music or art.
  • Volunteer.
  • Enroll in a class.
  • Contact someone you haven’t connected with in a long time.

Family or group fun

  • Attend events together; sports, concerts or movies are just a few options.
  • Volunteer together.
  • Join a club or take a class together. Choose something you all will enjoy.
  • Visit the zoo, art gallery or museum.
  • Have a staycation. Take day trips or tour your city.
  • Play games instead of spending time on the computer or watching television.
  • Make planning your vacation a group activity. If you’re going away and have children, encourage them to read about your destination. Discuss your trip and some of the sights you’ll see.

Once you’ve chosen what you’d like to do, focus on it and try to let go of your concerns during that time. If you have trouble letting go of worries and responsibilities, try to imagine you’re on vacation.
