April is prime time to visit these three places

Reykjavik, Iceland
Downtown Reykjavik, Iceland

April is a great month to vacation. Since Spring Break/March Break is over, we’re entering into a less busy travel period, which means lower prices and fewer tourists where you visit. I find it a great month to see beautiful places without a lot of people around.  I wrote a post last month about the best places to visit in March. If none of the places I mention here are appealing, the ones I listed in that post are still good in April too.

From seeing vineyards, or visiting beautiful sites, April has many options. I’m only going to focus on three that I really enjoyed during the month. Even though April is more reasonable to travel, as a reminder I have to two main cost saving tips that can help even further reduce the price.

Two weeks is the sweet spot: When not fully booked, airlines, hotels, and cruise ships often offer huge discounts two weeks before the travel date.

Be flexible: The time of day and the day of the week you travel can have a huge impact on costs either higher or lower.

Some places to visit in April

I tried to pick places that people may not consider as their top destination spot.

Scopello, Sicily, Italy

Scopello Sicilly.jpg
Scopello, Sicily

When I hear people talk about visiting Italy, It’s mostly to Rome, Florence, Venice, or Milan, and more. Italy is a beautiful country all over; I have not been to a place there that didn’t have spectacular sights. I was born in Sicily, and there is a wide variety of things to do and see. Late April is a great time to go. It’s not going to be beach weather, well for some people it may suffice, but there’s far more to do than the beaches.

Sicily has more than 600 miles of sands, inlets, nature reserves, and resorts. The southern side has spectacular ruins beyond the beaches, magnificent scenery and architecture.

 Some attractions
Riserva naturale dello Zingaro
Riserva naturale dello Zingaro

Riserva naturale dello Zingaro: You can only visit the reserve on foot. It’s ideal for hiking and taking in amazing sites, including picnic areas, museums, and for bird lovers there are over 30 species of birds there.

Vineyards: There are over 700 vineyards in Sicily. You can find several in the Trapani region in and around Scopello. TripAdvisor has ratings from visitors on some of the top vineyards in the area. You won’t be disappointed; generous portions of top-quality wine and cuisine are in abundance.

Calatafimi Segesta

Roman ruins and architecture: Calatafimi-Segesta, Alcamo, and Erice are three places you can tour to see what makes this part of Italy so unique.

Food scene: There are restaurants scattered all over Scopello, so you won’t have trouble just popping in and grabbing a bite to eat when you’re hungry. The restaurant at Hotel La Tavernetta has great views and is known for its service and food.

Nightlife: There are a few places to unwind with music and drinks. Check out what people are saying on Yelp for places and events.

Average temperature: High 63F / 17C, Low 50F /10C

Reykjavik, Iceland

The famous blue lagoon near Reykjavik, Iceland

I will say upfront that Reykjavik is expensive and it definitely will not be warm, but pictures and words cannot do it justice. If it is in your budget, the experience is worth it.

Some attractions

Relaxing: The Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa, just outside of the city is spectacular no matter what time of year. Whale watching season starts in April, and you may even spot some dolphins or seals. Taking a walk on the waterfront is free and beautiful when you want some down time.

Sites to see: If you get there before mid-April, you can still catch the Northern Lights. There is so much beauty in the city’s natural wonders no matter what time of year you go. The national park, geyser, and waterfalls are all sites to see. Try to check out one of the museums when you’re there, especially if there is a day when you may not want to be outside as much. If you’re into music, The Icelandic Punk Museum is great.

Landmannalaugar, Iceland

Active: There are quite a few caves that you can explore not too far from the city like Raufarholshellir. I recommend a tour guide for any cave exploration. You can organize hiking tours as well just outside of the city.

Food scene: Reykjavik is notoriously expensive. Alcohol is especially pricey. It’s not a place I visited for the food but there were many more options than research had led me to believe. I found quite a few notable places. Baejarins Beztu Pylsur,  is a food truck that claims the best hot dogs in town. It is great for an affordable, quick and tasty lunch on the go. Snaps Bistro is reasonable priced and has great service, food and drinks. I highly recommend it, even if you just want to pop in for a drink.

Average temperature: High 44.6F / 7C, Low 33.8F /1C (later in the month it goes up)

Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica, Central America

Peninsula Papagayo, Costa Rica

I was in Costa Rica last year for a business trip. Although it was March when I was there, I was told that March and April have similar temperatures, but April is cheaper to go and less busy. So, if it’s anything like I experienced, then it is a must see. I’m not sure when I’ll get back there, so I wanted to cover it. Note that it is very hot there, so if you love the heat, this is for you!

Some attractions

Playa Hermosa

Beaches: Playa Hermosa is a beautiful beach, and it’s quiet. It’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing.

Sporty: You can also surf, swim and snorkel at one of the other beaches. Nearby, you can find deep sea fishing, boating, jet skiing, water sports, zip lining and river rafting.

Food scene: There are a lot of restaurants around the area, including along the Playa Hermosa beach. Two restaurants that stood out to me were Le COQ, which serves Lebanese food and Kaixo, which is a mix of Spanish and International. Casual atmospheres and great meals at both with a lot of options that were vegetation, vegan and gluten-free, so they’re perfect for anyone. Service was friendly and great too.

Average temperature: High 93 F / 34 C, Low 75F /24 C
