My tricks for women and men to look your winter finest from NY fashion week

winter fashion

My jacket is from BCBG and has a hood as well. Aldo’s jacket is from The North Face.

Winter seems to be coming faster than I’d like to admit … and for those of you that live in warm climates, or it’s summer where you are, I’m super jealous right now! It’s tough some days to pull off looking good and feeling comfortable in your winter outerwear (I mean how can you when it’s freezing outside) but I’ve found some tricks that work.

Women

Boots

Warm boots are essential in some parts of the world and can be clunky and ugly, but who wants to ruin nice boots with dirty slush, snow and street salt. It also makes carrying extra shoes sometimes a necessity, but I’m just going to talk about how to make the trek outside more fashionable.

I sometimes wear wedge heeled boots in the winter. I’ve never had a problem with them as long as they have treads!

I have no idea what is coming out of the sky today, but it’s wet

Something is pelting you from the sky, whether it’s hail or sleet, ice rain, or snow. You need to keep your feet warm and dry! Both of these boots are weatherproof, insulated and look good.

“Regular” bone-chilling cold days

These boots are weatherproof and insulated as well, because who am I fooling, in winter sometimes something just starts falling from the sky, and who wants to be unprepared.

It’s cold but I just want to look good so who cares about the weather days

These are the days that are cold, but not too bad. Or you really just don’t care and will weather it (pun intended – wait is that a pun?). I still kept the choices relatively weather-safe with lower heels!

Jackets

I get chilled to the bone in damp cold weather. I’ll admit that I have three (or more – don’t judge me J ) winter-type coats for the different weather, but I’m just going to talk about two.

Super-cold I can’t feel my face days

I have a jacket that is good in temperatures from -10°C (14°F) to -30°C (-22°F), granted it hasn’t hit -30°C that I’ve seen, but I did mention I get bone-chilled. If you live where it gets this cold, then these are great looks that keeps you warm – well you know, as warm as you can get!

You can get away with more here. I use this as my everyday jacket in the winter, and once something happens to the one I currently have, I’ll replace it with something below. I love fitted coats, usually in bright colors or shiny material. It helps take away from the grayness of the days. Depending on the temperature, I’ll add layers underneath like a sweater or thin jacket.

Hats, scarves, gloves

Let your personality shine with your combo. I don’t wear hats and rarely a scarf because of my jacket choices. I wear two pairs of gloves because I don’t like bulky gloves or mittens. I buy a cheap pair from the dollar store (why is it still called the dollar store when most things cost more than that?) and put pretty gloves on top. Here are some options I like.

Men

Can you just wear turtlenecks all the time???? If not, here are some things I find look great during the winter months.

Boots

I’ve mentioned before that I love men’s shoes and boots. So, I had no trouble at all picking standouts to me from the current trends.

Jackets

There are a ton of awesome jackets for men. It was tough for me to even narrow it down to favorites for winter, but I managed!

Hats, scarves, gloves

Let your style pop with your combo. I like a man in a hat. I know a lot that don’t wear them and opt for nothing or ear warmers, which I get because it can ruin your hair. As a side note, if you follow my “wear a turtleneck all the time” advice, then you never need a scarf; you’re ready to go!

Here are some options that I like. And I am Canadian, so of course I like the toque!
