Beaches to visit this winter that offer so much more

fleurieu kangaroo island

Kangaroo Island, Fleurieu Peninsula, Australia

My first post on this blog was Five awesome beach destinations last December. I thought I would do another one with some additional spots. If you’re starting to plan your next trip, this is the post for you.  If you want a beach getaway, some of the top spots aren’t ones many tourists frequent. I haven’t included places such as Spain, Galapagos Islands, Greece or some of the popular Caribbean islands because people tend to try those on their own.

One of my suggestions other than the ones I talk about below is to check out one of the islands that were hit hard this year with hurricanes, some of them are rebuilding, and tourism is more than welcome.

Here is a short-list of some of the ones I’ve loved, listed in alphabetical order.

Chennai, India

Marina Beach, Chennai, India

I went to Chennai for business, and it was a great experience. There are a lot of sites to see, things to do and of course a great beach.

Some attractions

Beaches: Marina Beach is one of longest beaches in the world. Besant Nagar beach is also beautiful and less crowded than Marina. Both beaches you can find an abundance of food, amazing views, and see some attractions nearby like a lighthouse, church, and a memorial.  You can waterski and jetski nearby as well.

Sites: There are many fantastic temples and historic buildings to see in the city. Kapaleeswarar Temple Sri Ramakrishna Math, San Thome Basicila, Chennai Central Railway Station or Gandhi’s Statue are just a sample.

Art and shopping: There are a lot of shopping centers and art galleries in the city. LIOA Art Gallery showcases different styles of paintings, and the National Art Gallery has tenth-century paintings, religious statues and is busy but a must see if you’re a cultural enthusiast.

Nature: Check out nature and animals in one of these places, Crocodile Park or Guindy National Park. The Huddleston Gardens of Theosophical Society, or Semmozhi Poonga are great for nature walks.

Food scene: Chennai is an excellent place to dine, especially if you’re gluten-free, vegan or vegetarian. My favorite restaurant was Madras restaurant. It’s located in the Raintree Hotel in Chennai and is known for its delicious home-style cooking. I found the curries exceptional.

All of the places I mentioned are family-friendly.

Average temperature: High 80 F / 27 C, Low 60 F /20 C

Fleurieu Peninsula, Australia

As you may have noticed, Australia pops up a lot in my posts. I have only been once, two years ago, but I spent a month there and mostly in the south. The Fleurieu Peninsula is located outside of Adelaide in the south. If you love beaches and Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other hearty wines, you will be in your element.

Some attractions

Beaches: Fleurieu has an abundance of beaches. Southport, Seaford, Moana, and Sellicks offer surfing for new and experienced surfers. Maslin Beach is the nudist beach and has swimming, boating, fishing, and water-sports. Middleton Beach is very peaceful and a great place to relax and enjoy the views.

Vineyards: There are over 70 cellars. Victor Harbour, Mclaren Vale, Langhorne Creek are just a few of the names.

Sporty: Go surfing, skydiving, golfing, hiking, fishing and cycling.

Food scene: I enjoyed local Australian food a great deal. The food in Fleurieu is locally sourced, and there are a lot of impressive options. Eat local South Australia has a list of options in the region.

If you are looking for things to do with the family, these are family friendly places, and free.

  • Granite Island: Stroll the island and penguin watch.
  • South Australian Whale Center:  Showcases whale artifacts and exhibits.
  • Coorong National Park: Campgrounds, swimming and surfing, and wildlife sightings.

Average temperature: High 83 F / 28.5 C, Low 62 F /16.5C

Negril, Jamaica

Pristine Cove, Negril Jamaica

If you have your heart set on the Caribbean, I mentioned that I think it’s worth it to look into one of the places that were hit this year with one or more hurricanes during the season. Jamaica wasn’t one of them so it might be optimal for you, but prices will be even higher than usual. I went to Negril in June a few years ago. It was a great four-day trip for me, and I normally don’t do all-inclusive resorts. I made sure to take trips off-resort every day, even for a few hours.

Some attractions

Beaches: Seven Mile beach is a picturesque white sand beach where you can swim, snorkel, jet ski or just hang out. You can also swim, snorkel and cliff dive at The Cliffs. There are caves to swim in too. I enjoyed my experience here.

Nature and sporty: You can also surf, swim and snorkel at one of the other beaches. You can find deep sea fishing, boating, jet skiing, water sports, zip lining, ATVing and river rafting, or go on a safari.

Food scene: Since I was at a resort, I tried to eat most of my meals there but wanted to get a flavor for more authentic food, so I did get recommendations for some local restaurants to try. Two restaurants that stood out to me were Just Natural, which serves healthy, excellent Jamaican and Caribbean food, far from a resort experience, and Rockhouse Restaurant, which specializes in seafood and Jamaican cuisine. Casual atmospheres and great meals at both with a lot of options that were vegetation, vegan and gluten-free, so they’re perfect for anyone. Service was friendly and great too.

Nightlife: There are plenty of places to go off resort. The Jungle is one nightclub that is a fun time with cheap drinks. Collette’s Bar is a small local bar with great drinks and a welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

All the things I mentioned above are family-friendly other than the nightlife section.

Average temperature: High 83 F / 28 C, Low 74 F /23 C

I was in Costa Rica earlier this year and loved it. Please note that I’m updating this as I read that they just had an earthquake in the country on Sunday. I wrote this post prior to Sunday but still recommend it.

Some attractions

Beaches: Playa Hermosa is a beautiful beach, and it’s quiet. It’s perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and surfing.

Sporty: You can also surf, swim and snorkel at one of the other beaches. Nearby, you can find deep sea fishing, boating, jet skiing, water sports, zip lining and river rafting.

Rio Celeste Waterfall

Food scene: There are a lot of restaurants around the area, including along the Playa Hermosa beach. Two restaurants that stood out to me were Le COQ, which serves Lebanese food and Kaixo, which is a mix of Spanish and International. Casual atmospheres and great meals at both with a lot of options that were vegetation, vegan and gluten-free, so they’re perfect for anyone. Service was friendly and great too.

All the things I mentioned above are family-friendly.

Average temperature: High 81 F / 27 C, Low 72 F /22 C

  1. Beautiful places. I agree about going to some of the places that had hurricane damage. Some are rebuilding and for some tourism is most of their sources of income. In Canada, some airlines aren’t going to some places but a lot are.Awesome post
