Quiz: How’s your life balance – plus some tips to improve it


Apparently it’s possible to lose your balance in flats when you’re barely moving!

Do you feel like there’s not enough time in the day to get things done?  Does vacation time seem like something you can get to in the “distant future”? I’m perpetually in this state, and right now it’s time to reevaluate my priorities.  If you’re in the same boat, this quiz can help you measure your degree of balance between the demands of work, family responsibilities and your time.

For the questions below, give yourself a number from a scale of 1 to 5.

What your total score means:

  • A total score of less than 20: You have learned to balance family, work and your needs.
  • A total score of 21–30: You have managed a good balance with some need for improvement.
  • A total score of 31–40: You have a fair balance with areas for improvement.
  • A total score of 41–50: You are having trouble managing your family, work and personal needs.

Some tips to get more balance in your life

Stop to smell the roses – or any flowers!

  1. Evaluate what your priorities are and focus on your “big picture.”
  2. Plan and prioritize when you have conflicting demands.
  3. Pay attention to the warning signs when the demands of work take up personal time, or when personal responsibilities distract you at work or school.
  4. Relaxation -including private time away from partners and family members, if applicable —is essential to rejuvenate.
  5. Approach commitments with goals and a positive attitude.
  6. Work towards open communication with work and personal relationships including effectively letting them know when things are getting too much to handle.
  7. Shift gears when it’s time to refocus your priorities.

  1. Great post. I always liked the ‘wheel’ analogy. Thinking of each area in our lives as a spoke. If the spokes are different sizes, it’s likely to be a bumpy ride.

  2. Ahhh Samantha! I’ve missed your blogs! This post was at the perfect timing – I’ve been swept up in so much work at the end of the school year, that I literally had no time to sit down in front of the computer for some free time! It’s ironic that the first blog post I read from you after a month long hiatus is about my life balance. As a student, it’s so hard to juggle academics, extracurriculars, sports, friends/social life, and blogging! This quiz (my score was astoundingly bad…) was a reality check for me.     • I’m in the same boat Steph! I haven’t had time to read blogs in ages.I am writing posts at 10:30 at night these days…so I felt that this post was needed :). I hope you can get to regroup this summer and maybe approach next semester with a more balanced approach. I also haven’t forgotten that we need to do some posts, maybe we can start in July!
