Awesome DIY Mother’s Day gifts sure to melt her heart

Even if you’ve already picked up something for Mother’s Day, you may want to supplement it with something personally made by you. I used to be the Queen of the DIY gift. Time became an issue, and I started buying gifts. But I’m back to carving out some time to make things again because they’re so personal, and some don’t have to take a lot of time or skill. I’m personally much more adept at artsy computer things than I am other crafts, so I tend to make cards, calendars, books or photo collages. But I do some others too.

the art of being fabulous_cover
The Art of Being Fabulous started out as a book of inspirational quotes I wrote for my niece and then evolved eventually into this blog!

Here are some ideas for Mother’s Day that I’ve used in the past, or will be using again. I can’t share which ones in case she reads this! I didn’t add calendars to this list because it’s already May.

Book of quotes – with a template (computer/laptop friendly)

Mothers Day Cover
Cover page from the template

I created the Art of Being Fabulous book in PowerPoint. If you’re not good with PowerPoint or even if you are and want to save time, I’ve included a template at the end of the instructions , so all you have to do is change the photos and words. Here’s how to do it.

  • PowerPoint: You can find it on your desktop, laptop, or as an app on your phone or mobile device.  Not everyone has it on any, so if you don’t skip this one. If you want to make it, find someone or somewhere that has it and do it there
  • Either: A hole punch and ribbon, a stapler and staples, or glue
  • Optional: Stickers, glitter, paper glue, and scissors to decorate the front and back covers

1 – Click on the link to the template to open it

Mothers Day Template

Note: The template automatically downloads when you click on it, I don’t know how to stop it from doing that!

  • You will see a cover page, a blank page and then pages with pictures and words

2 – How to change the photos

One of the pages in the template
  • Right click your mouse on the photo and a list of choices will pop up on your screen. Choose “Change picture.” It will let you pick a photo from one of your files.

3 – How to change the words

Click where it says “Write quote here” and put in the words you want to use
  • Move your mouse to the front of the first word, left click the mouse and then drag it across the words to delete all the words. Type in the words you want to use.

4 – Put the printed book together

USB / portable storage
  • When you’re done, save it and then it’s ready to print.
  • If you have a color printer at home, print it. If you don’t (like me!) find a place around you that can print it. You will have to put it on a USB / portable storage and take it to them, or you can email it or upload the file to the location and pick it up when it’s ready.
  • Assemble pages in the order you want
  • Staple or glue the pages together 1/4 cm on the left-hand side of the paper (if gluing, make sure you glue all pages together), and it’s ready!

  • Punch 1-3 holes 1/4 cm on the left-hand side of the paper
  • Tie the ribbon through the holes
  • Wrap the ribbon around the folded part of the book, and it’s ready!

Optional: To make it extra special, write a personal message on the blank page. You can also use stickers, glitter, paper glue and scissors to decorate the book.

  • Keep the blank page after the cover page. It looks better, and you can hand write an extra message if you want.
  • Keep the words simple, like short quotes.
  • Click “save” after every page or two to make sure it saves.

Party or dinner mood enhancer and keepsake photo collage

Taking a photo in front of a picture collage on the tv I made for a New Years pre-party get together with photos of all the guests.

I make a photo collage for every party or special dinner I host.

USB plugged into the back of the tv
  • Put as many pictures past and present you can find of the person or people you want to include in the collage.
  • Put the pictures on a USB /  portable drive
  • Plug it into the USB port at the back of your tv (like shown in the picture) and let it play until dinner or the party is done.
  • Give it to the guest of honor afterward.

It goes over well with everyone. It makes them feel special.

Take it back to childhood with a fun card

Still in my pajamas finishing up a homemade birthday card a few years ago

So, I have done this for almost everyone I know at least once. All you need is to remember what it was like to make cards when you were little and then amp it up a bit.

Construction paper
Construction paper
  • Construction paper folded in half, how many pieces will depend on how many pages you want to do. I usually did a 4-8-page card, so 2-4 pieces of construction paper. Many places sell it like Walmart.
  • Pencil crayons, colored markers and/or crayons (I did say take it back to childhood!)
  • Glitter, stickers, whatever you feel like using!
  • Glue for paper or scotch tape
  • Scissors
  • Pictures of her favorite things (personal or from a magazine)

Glitter stickers
Is there anything better than glitter stickers?

Basically, all you need to do is:

  • Cut out enough photos to fill the pages you want to use,
  • Write her some messages, or quotes around each picture
  • Draw whatever you want around the pictures like hearts or flowers
  • Add your glitter or stickers

Note: You can also buy a scrapbook and do this as a scrapbook too

These are some of my DIY ideas, what are some of yours? Have a wonderful day!
